The Rules

Published by oldwestmom

I’ll show you the way to understanding and appreciating the music, but you’ve gotta follow my rules.

  1. NO INTERRUPTIONS - If you really want to appreciate a musical piece, you’ve got to give it all your attention
  2. Listen to it with the volume cranked.  Turn it up as loud as you can tolerate it.  Better yet, use a set of quality headphones.  You need to be immersed.  You need to envelope yourself completely in the music.
  3. Listen to once all the way through, then listen to it again to catch the details.  There will be elements that you missed the first time.
  4. Close your eyes.  Don’t be afraid to sway or move your arms.
  5. Open your mind.  Let the music take you where ever it leads.  If it makes you think of pink prancing ponies frolicking in a field, then embrace the imagery and go with the flow.
  6. Do not judge a book by its cover.  Intros can be slow or even unimpressive, but there may be a fantastic theme introduced later in the piece.
