A Musician Trapped in a Talentless Body

Published by oldwestmom

Well, perhaps talentless is unfair.  I have some talent.  It’s mediocre at best, but at least I can sit down and hammer out a tune.

What I do have is the ability to recognize and appreciate great talent.

After all,

Looks don’t concern me, maestro. Only talent interests a woman of taste.

-Katerina Cavaleiri to Salieri in Amadeus

That movie actually moved me on many levels.  It’s a fine movie, but the character Salieri is what I really identified with.  F. Murray Abraham won a very well deserved Oscar for portraying the part.  There is another line in that movie spoken by Salieri that repeats in my head constantly like a broken record.

All I wanted was to sing to God. He gave me that longing… and then made me mute. Why? Tell me that. If He didn’t want me to praise him with music, why implant the desire? Like a lust in my body! And then deny me the talent?

Well put, my good man.  And so, like Antonio Salieri, I have the power to truly hear good music and the desire to produce masterful compositions, but not the talent.  He and I are kindred and tormented souls.

That’s enough about me for the purposes of this blog.  For more about my personal life and my other passions, head on over to my other blog Forever Family .

Traviata for the Captcha???? I swear…there’s some little troll out there who’s picking those words and likes to give us little gems like that. How appropriate!
